Tommy Ruff or Herring

Best Bait:

Maggots, prawns, white bait, burley mix.

Tommy ruff are plentiful in South Australia and Western Australia during summer and autumn and are found along the beaches, estuaries and piers etc. While not a large fish, they fight well for their size and are tasty to eat.

As with most fish, they tend to bite at dawn and dusk but can be caught at other times pharmacy depending on local conditions. If fishing from a boat, berley is often used. Rigs with miniature burley containers and floating rigs are also successful.

When fishing from a jetty, always fish with the tide running away from you. Do not cast more than a few metres out. If you cast well out, eventually you will take the fish right out of casting distance.
