This little reel makes an ideal light boat or estuary reel for adults and will still handle the harsh treatment of young anglers in a sandy and saltwater environment.   The 40GDZ is for adults or the more advanced junior angler that wants to let their fish take some line under clutch pressure (anti-reverse switch on).

A fish alert also sounds to tell your line is being taken.   You can also select no anti-reverse and no noise if required. Reels work for right handed or left handed use. With Alvey’s revolutionary Easy Cast System, teaching the children to cast could not be easier. The Easy Cast System will also operate in right or left hand position.

Now that they are casting like champions you will spend less time helping and more time fishing.

Great for Flathead, Whiting, Bream, Dart, Yellow Belly, Bass

Cheap and Light, but "Disposable"

I have used one of these for years (it was a 40BXL back then) and just bought 2 more, so you might call me a fan. But I wanted to debunk a few myths.

First it is far from indestructible. Sure, kids may not wreck it in a few hours, but if you use it for a few years, the easy-cast system will fail. First the bolt will strip the plastic thread, and you can repair this with a longer bolt and nut if you are handy. Then the ridges will wear down (sand abrades plastic) so the reel twists under load, and becomes useless. This cannot be repaired. Unlike the more expensive Alvey reels with stainless steel back and casting lever, which seem to last forever.

Second, the star drag nut (now called the tri-star nut) does not increase the (preset) drag, it just makes the spool harder to turn. The preset drag is useful for small fish but to use it you must remove your hand from the reel. Fine once you get used to it, but not like the more expensive Alvey reels with adjustable drag that works with your hand on the handle, without making the spool harder to turn.

Thirdly see the review of the Alvey 50GCZ by Kelvin Noske, for problems with the drag switch in the cheaper Alvey reels.

Still, it is wonderfully light, and cheap enough to replace when it wears out. Just buy it knowing the limitations.

Its a nice compact reel, I'm using it out of my kayak and it has proved ideal for that purpose and if I do roll or fall out of the kayak water damage will not be an issue, I am finding it is easy to cast and gives me good line control when reeling back in and I can vary my retreaval speeds with lures and soft plastics really well.

Entry level Alveys

Purchased to of these 40GDZ reel to match up with some Alvey general purpose rods for the kids. Probably not as robust looking as I’d initially thought but we’ll see how they go. They have a bit to live up to with the other Alvey arsenal 🎣

Fantastic for school students

We are an Environmental Education Centre and we purchased Alvey reels for use on our fishing excursions with school students. Unlike any other reel we have tried, Alvey reels are indestructible! They can withstand saltwater and sand, unlike the others and I highly recommend them. The customer service we received was also outstanding.

Alvey Adventurer 40GDZ sidecast fishing reel.

As an owner of 2 of these reels, land based, mostly freshwater, with 10lb.& 20lb. braid, with 9ft.& 10ft. rods, I find them extremely good. At 92 years and vision impaired these reels are perfect for me. Thanks ALVEY.
